Along with the nearby Ballybunion Golf Club, Waterville Golf Links sits at the pinnacle of Irish links golf.
Golf in Waterville dates back to 1889, when workers on the transatlantic cables at nearby Valentia Island established a course for recreational use. Since then the course has been expanded and redesigned into a perennial favourite among golfers of all levels. Over the years, Waterville has been host to some of golfing’s greatest: Tiger Woods, Ernie Els and Payne Stewart.
A par 72 at 6,783 yards, Waterville can be as rewarding as it can be punishing. Weather conditions will be a significant factor in any round; and with winds whipping in from the Atlantic, you would be better advised to keep your shots low. The subtle beauty of the course is best shown on ‘Tranquility,’ a stunning par 5 which slopes gently through the dunes. Gary Player called it “the most beautiful and satisfying par five of them all.”
Well-loved and well-recognised, Waterville has consistently been recognised as one of Ireland’s, if not the world’s, outstanding golf courses. In the words of 4-time major winner Raymond Floyd, “this is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen it has some of the finest links holes I have ever played.”
